BLOOD TESTS EXPLAINED CARDIOLOGY  Learn if your lifestyle is supporting your cardiovascular health. Check for factors that impact heart health such as diabetes, PCOS, menopause and autoimmune inflammatory conditions. Creatinine Kinase - is an enzyme found mainly in your skeletal muscles as well as your brain and heart.  It plays an important role in muscle contraction, raised levels may indicate of muscle damage.  Ferritin - is a protein that stores and regulates the amount of iron in your body balanced. It plays a role in making RBC’s, energy and the immune system. Low levels can show depression, mood disorders and fatigue. Haemoglobin - is a protein found in blood which transports oxygen to cells throughout the body. Low levels can indicate anaemia, infections, fatigue and low immune system. Red Blood Cell Count - RBC – is a measure of the number of Red Blood Cells in the body. The RBC’s transport oxygen around the body. Low levels indicate Anaemia. GROWTH, REPRODUCTIVE & SEXUAL HORMONES Female hormones Panels - useful tests for women who are either trying or planning to have children and want to check their key fertility hormones or if they are having any form of menstrual irregularities, fertility issues, PMS, PCOS or think they may be menopausal. These tests are best done on day 3 of they’re cycle unless otherwise stated. Male Hormone Panel - Identify reasons for symptoms associated with hormone imbalance such as fatigue, low energy, reduced libido and mood changes. Anti-Mullerian Hormone – AMH - is a protein produced in the Ovaries and is used to measure  Ovarian reserve which are the number of eggs you have remaining in your Ovaries. Raised AMH may indicate PCOS. Low levels can indicate poor Fertility and Menopause. Follicle Stimulating Hormone FSH – is a hormone produced by in the pituitary of the brain which acts on a person’s reproductive glands. For women: FSH helps to regulate a woman's menstrual cycle by stimulating the production of oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries. As a woman transitions towards menopause, FSH levels will start to increase. For men: FSH helps regulate the production of sperm in the testes.  Free Androgen Index - is an estimate of the amount of free testosterone available in your body. Raised High levels in women can lead to fertility problems. Free Testosterone (calculated) – is also called bioavailable testosterone, it’s an estimated measure of the level of testosterone in blood which is not bound to both SHBG and albumin. Luteinising Hormone – LH – is produced by the pituitary, and is key in helping to regulate hormonal changes in both men and women. For Women: LH helps to regulate a woman's menstrual cycle by stimulating ovulation. High or low levels can indicate fertility issues or irregular periods. During menopause, LH levels naturally start to increase. For Men: LH stimulates the production of testosterone in men to support sperm production.  High or low levels can indicate testicular failure or issues with the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Oestradiol – is the main form Oestrogen or Estrogen in the body, it plays a key role in the reproductive cycle, cardiovascular health, metabolism, nerve health and bone strength. For Women: oestrogen regulates a woman’s cycle, during perimenopause the levels will naturally reduce leading to a range of debilitating symptoms. For Men: oestrogen is produced from testosterone and is in much smaller quantities than a woman. It plays a role in erectile function, sperm production, mood, bone health and libido. Progesterone – is a hormone made in the pituitary that tells the uterus to prepare for conception and menstruation. It can help to confirm ovulation. With menopause progesterone levels naturally decrease as the ovaries stop working. This test is taken on day 21 of the menstrual cycle. Prolactin - is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in your brain. It can be raised in response to stress, but can indicate fertility issues, irregular periods and PCOS. Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin – SHBG - is a protein which transports oestradiol and testosterone around the body. Once these hormones are attached to SHBG they become inactive until they unbind from SHBG influencing the amount of these hormones active in the body and their effects. Testosterone (total) – is a hormone found in all genders and naturally decline with age starting from 40-50 years old causing fatigue, low mood, loss of strength and poor libido. For Women: Raised Testosterone can indicate Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS. For Men: Testosterone is a key hormone for men affecting sexual function, bone and muscle mass, energy and the brain. Testosterone is stimulated and controlled by LH, which is why testing more than testosterone alone provides you with better insight. IMMUNOLOGY  identifies reasons for recurrent viral or bacterial infections such as coughs, colds or injuries that are slow to heal. Omega 3 & 6 – these are essential fatty acids that play a role in lowering inflammation especially cardiovascular. The body doesn't make omega 3 or omega 6 so requires it from your diet. However, too much Omega 6 can increase your risk of heart disease, whilst omega 3 which is predominately found in oily fish  is known to reduce the risk of heart disease.  Omega 3 Ratio - The ideal ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 is 3:1 however, poor diets often increase these ratios. Please note there is 10-15 days turnaround for this blood test. White Blood Cell Count - WBC - is a measure of the number of White Blood Cells in your blood. There are 5 main types of white blood cells: basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and neutrophils. All play a play in protecting your body against infection. A low count can indicate that you have a weak immune system, whilst a high count can indicate infection or inflammation. KIDNEY / RENAL FUNCTION assesses how well your kidneys are functioning. Note that for those doing high levels of exercise urea and creatinine can be higher due to muscle breakdown. This test can useful in assessing recovery. Chloride - measures the amount of Chloride in your blood. Chloride is a type of electrolyte. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals. Raised levels indicate Dehydration, Kidney disease or Metabolic acidosis or your Kidneys are not functioning correctly. Creatinine - Creatinine is a waste product that is produced when your muscles breakdown through activity.  This waste product is filtered by your kidneys and then removed from your body through urine. It is therefore an important gauge of how well your kidneys are working.   Dehydroepiandrosterone-Sulfate - DHEAS - a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal gland that converts into oestrogen and androgens (testosterone), its levels naturally lower with anyone over 50 especially in women following menopause. Raised levels may indicate PCOS, Adrenal issues or an Adrenal tumour. Unusually low levels can indicate osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, Addison's disease or memory loss. Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate -  eGFR - measures how well your kidneys are filtering creatinine. Raised levels can indicate Kidney disease. Sodium - is an electrolyte and plays a vital role in regulation of fluids within all the cells, in nerve conduction and all muscle contractions; without sodium the body cannot function. Low sodium can be a sign of dehydration, excess sweating, diarrhoea, and certain medications. raised levels can cause hypertension. Urea – plays a role in Kidney function alongside creatinine. Raised levels can indicate low kidney health, dehydration and excessive exercise. Uric Acid – is also known as urate is a waste product removed by your kidneys. Raised levels can indicate reduced kidney function, gout or kidney stones. LIVER / HEPATOLOGY FUNCTION This liver test will help to identify any problems in liver function. The liver can become damaged due to the consumption of excessive calories or drinking too much alcohol. Alanine Aminotransferase – ALT - is an enzyme found in the Liver which helps to break down your fats, proteins and alcohol. Consistently raised levels can be a sign of liver damage or excess alcohol consumption. Albumin - is a protein made in your Liver playing a key role in transportation of Calcium around the body, it is a health marker for Bone health alongside Calcium and Vitamin D. Alkaline Phosphatase – ALP - is an enzyme produced in your Liver and is responsible for Liver function and breaking down Bone in remodelling. It can be affected by smoking, drinking and obesity. Raised ALP is associated with problems with your Liver or Bones.  Cortisol (9am) - is a hormone which is used in fight or flight in response to stress. It helps regular the metabolism of Glucose in the Liver and break down fats and proteins aiding energy. Raised levels can indicate an issue with the adrenals, the Liver or prolonged stress. Over time this can lead to low energy, fatigue, weight gain, muscle weakness, diabetes T2, anxiety and poor mental health. Gamma-Glutamyl transferase - Gamma GT / GGT -  is an enzyme found in the Liver, Pancreas, Kidneys, Heart, Brain and in some tissues. It can be raised by alcohol, raised levels can indicate liver or bile duct issues. Globulin - Globulins are a family of over 60 proteins made by the Liver and immune system. Raised protein levels can indicate infections and disease.  Haemoglobin A1c - HbA1c – also called Glycated haemoglobin test. measures the concentration of blood glucose. Raised levels indicate type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. High-sensitive C-Reactive Protein - hs-CRP - is produced by your Liver in response to inflammation and measures the level of inflammation in your body. Raised levels indicate infection, disease or poor lifestyle. Prolonged raised levels increased risk of heart disease, cardiovascular disease and strokes. Total Protein – is a measure of the combined amount of Albumin and Globulin within your body. Raised levels can indicate dehydration, low levels can indicate Liver issues or a poor diet. These can be affected by water consumption daily. LIPIDS - FATS A standard cholesterol panel measuring both 'good' HDL cholesterol and 'bad' LDL cholesterol together with total cholesterol and triglycerides. High-density Lipoprotein - HDL - is the 'good' type of cholesterol, it acts like a scavenger removing excess cholesterol from your arteries. High levels of HDL are good as it lowers your risk of developing heart disease. HDL Ratio - This is the ratio of good HDL cholesterol compared to total cholesterol.  Low-density Lipoprotein - LDL - is the 'bad' type of cholesterol as it deposits excess cholesterol on your artery walls which will increase your risk of heart disease.   Total Cholesterol - is a measure of HDL, LDL and Triglycerides in your body. The target for healthy  total cholesterol level is below 5. Triglycerides - are the main type of fat found in our bodies.  Whilst fat is important in maintaining your energy levels, eat too much and it will be converted into Triglycerides. Consistently raised levels will increase risk of developing heart disease.   THYROID HORMONES Thyroglobulin Antibodies – is a protein used by the Thyroid gland to make T4 and T3. Raised levels indicate autoimmune diseases of the thyroid, most commonly in women. Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies – is a protein used by the Thyroid gland to convert T4 into T3. Raised levels indicate autoimmune diseases of the Thyroid, causing anxiety, weight changes, and tiredness. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone – TSH – is a hormone produced in the pituitary to act on the Thyroid gland stimulating the release of T4 and T3. Testing TSH can indicate over or underactive Thyroid function. Underactive can cause low mood, poor metabolism, weight gain and fatigue. Raised levels can create insomnia, mood swings, excessive sweating and eye issues. To truly identify thyroid function TSH needs to be tested alongside T4 and T3. Thyroxine (free direct) - FT4 / T4 – is a hormone produced by the Thyroid gland, it plays a key role in metabolism and brain development. Raised levels indicate hyperthyroidism. Low levels indicate hypothyroidism. To truly identify thyroid function T4 needs to be tested alongside TSH and T3. Triiodothyronine (free)  - FT3 / T3 – is a hormone produced by the Thyroid gland. It plays a key role in regulation of energy production, metabolism and brain development. This is more active than T4, when T4 is in excess it can be converted into T3. To truly identify thyroid function T3 needs to be tested alongside TSH and T4. VITAMINS & NUTRIENTS corrected Calcium – 99% of calcium is stored in your bones so it is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Low levels can indicate menopause or vitamin deficiency, low levels can  increase risk of Osteoporosis, stress fractures and other bone injuries. Folate - is also called Vitamin B9 or Folacin. Its a water-soluble vitamin  that plays a role in making RBC’s and DNA biosynthesis. The body doesn't store folic acid so requires it from your diet. Magnesium (serum) – is a vitamin that plays a role in energy production, muscle contraction, maintenance of strong bones and keeping your blood pressure within the healthy range. The body requires magnesium from your diet. Vitamin A – is also known as Retinol, its a nutrient with a key role in vision, the immune system, placenta health, ova development, mucous membrane maintenance in skin and organs. Too much Vitamin A can be harmful, certain conditions can also imbalance the bodies’ ability to absorb vitamin A these include: liver disease, Celiac disease, short gut syndrome, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic disease, liver cirrhosis, and having a deficiency in either iron or zinc. The body requires it from your diet – any yellow, orange or red coloured fruits or vegetables and in animal products like dairy, eggs, organ meats and fish. Vitamin B12 – is a nutrient with a key role in formation of RBC’s, regulation of moods, energy and metabolism. Low levels can lead to more muscle tone, weakness, fatigue and low moods. The body requires it from your diet – bananas, fortified cereals, nutritional yeasts and in animal products like dairy, eggs, red meat, poultry, beef organ meats, clams, oysters, and fish. Vitamin D (25-OH) – is a nutrient with a key role in preservation of bones, development of muscles, boosting our immune system and lowering inflammation. It comes from some foods such as fortified cereals, plant milks, fat spreads, mushrooms, and in animal products like cheese, egg yolks, oily fish, red meat and liver. Its main source comes from direct sunlight.  Vitamin E – is a nutrient that has a key role in making RBC’s, WBC’s, dilating blood vessels, enabling cell communication, and making vitamin K. its recommended to increase vitamin E levels while lactating. The body requires it from your diet – any green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils, fortified cereals, eggs and nuts. It is unusual to have a vitamin E deficiency, Low levels can indicate issues with digesting fats; symptoms include loss of muscle mass with weakness, visual issues with abnormal eye movements and unsteady on their feet.
